Philippe Soriano awarded 2017 Conklin Medal

The 2017 Society for Developmental Biology Edwin G. Conklin Medal was awarded to Philippe M. Soriano of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai for his extraordinary and sustained research contributions to the field of developmental biology and mentoring of the next generation of scientists.

Maria Barna awarded inaugural 2017 Elizabeth D. Hay New Investigator Award

Maria Barna, Assistant Professor of Genetics and Developmental Biology at Stanford University, received the inaugural Society for Developmental Biology Elizabeth D. Hay New Investigator Award for her outstanding research in developmental biology during the early stages of her independent career.

Freeman Hrabowski, III awarded 2017 Hamburger Outstanding Educator Prize

HrabowskiFreeman A. Hrabowski, III, President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) was awarded the 2017 Viktor Hamburger Outstanding Educator Prize for his outstanding contributions to developmental biology education through his advocacy for science education and groundbreaking initiatives for increasing diversity within the sciences.

2017 MBL Embryology Course report

This summer I was a student, along with 23 other scientists from around the world, in the 125th Embryology Course at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The Embryology Course is an intensive 6-week experience, combining morning lectures from over 40 faculty members with afternoon/evening labs covering a host of traditional and non-traditional model organisms.

Translating Drosophila research for K-12 audience

This past summer, we presented an Education Poster at the SDB Annual meeting in Minneapolis, MN. Our poster highlighted a recent student-centered creative writing project. We used Frontiers for Young Minds as a platform to “translate” our research into simpler text that children without an extensive scientific education could understand.

Choose Development! program applications open

Applications are open for the Choose Development! summer research program which aims to increase the diversity of undergraduate students that enter graduate programs in pursuit of research careers in developmental biology.  Undergraduates from underrepresented groups and  SDB members who would like to host a Fellow may apply now. Deadline: February 15, 2018

  • SDB Education Grant - to help defray costs of educational projects organized by SDB members - Deadline: December 1
