Fig. 1. Worms were fed RITC-conjugates, and viewed using U.V. epi-illumination. a) Low magnification photo of approximately the anterior 40% of the animal. Only the gut cells show uptake of pinocytosed material into secondary lysosomes. In this preparation RITC-albumen was used instead of RITC-dextran, but similar results are obtained for both conjugates. b) Higher magnification of an RITC-dextran preparation covering approximately one pair of gut cells; the dark mass in the center of the cell is the nucleus. We chose a dextran conjugate because this material is not degraded in secondary lysosomes.
