Assistant Editor, Current Biology

Posted 1/22/2018

The Cell Press journal Current Biology is seeking an assistant editor as maternity cover from April to November 2018.

As an editor on the journal, you would be involved in assessing papers offered to the journal, and where appropriate selecting referees, overseeing peer review and making and communicating post-review decisions. You would also be expected to contribute to the commissioning of ‘front matter’ articles, such as commentaries, reviews and so on. In all these activities you would work closely with the rest of the journal’s editorial team.

We are looking for applicants with a very strong grounding in the core areas of biology — genetics, biochemistry and cell biology — and also a broad outlook and interest in biology generally. A successful applicant should be highly literate, with strong communication skills — in particular, an ability to write clearly. They should be able to work under pressure and manage their time to carry out multiple disparate tasks efficiently.

This would be an ideal opportunity for someone to learn about biology editing at the highest level and to gain invaluable experience that we expect would be a great help in further pursuing a career in science editing.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in relevant discipline; previous editorial experience is not necessary but would be an advantage
  • Broad scientific interests and a desire to learn. As a scientific editor, you will need to have a strong understanding of the diverse areas covered by the journal and the conceptual questions that drive different fields, as well as be open to exciting emerging topics.
  • Good interpersonal skills. Collaboration and networking are core aspects of the job.
  • Strong ability to communicate clearly.
  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and focus.

This is a full-time in-house editorial position — running from April to November 2018 — based in the London office at 125 London Wall.

The deadline for applications is 16th February 2018. Please submit a CV and include a cover letter describing why you are interested in the job and how you feel you would be suited to the role. Applications will be held in the strictest of confidence.
